After builders cleaning checklist
A stage-by-stage list for clearing fine plaster dust, haze and paint after building work. Print it, or save it as a PDF, and work the stages in order.
Builders' dust is fine and it travels into every room, settling again for hours after the first wipe. So an after builders clean runs in stages: knock down the bulk, remove the residue top to bottom, then a final detail pass once the air has settled. Work the stages in order rather than room by room.

Before you start
- Builder has removed rubble, offcuts and any skip waste
- Trades finished, tools and materials off site
- Water and mains power are on
- Allow 24 to 48 hours for airborne dust to settle first
Stage 1: debris and dust knockdown
- Sweep and vacuum loose plaster, debris and grit (HEPA filtration)
- Knock the thick dust off floors, ledges and high surfaces
- Bag and remove general clean-up waste (not building rubble)
Stage 2: main clean, top down
- Plaster dust and cement haze washed off walls, glass and hard floors
- Paint flecks, silicone smears and adhesive removed from fittings and glass
- Stickers and labels peeled off new windows, units and white goods
- Grout haze and cement film cleared from fresh tiling
- Skirting boards, sockets, switch plates and radiators wiped
- Doors, frames and handles cleaned
Stage 3: sparkle and final detail
- Let the air settle, then a second pass over surfaces that caught fresh dust
- Glass, mirrors and chrome polished
- Internal window glass, frames and sills (heavy splatter)
- Dust cleared from tracks, hinges, vents and trickle vents
- Floors vacuumed and mopped to suit the surface
Often added on
- Inside new kitchen units and appliances before they are loaded
- Carpet or new floor clean once the dusty work is finished
- A second visit a few days on to catch dust that has resettled
- Light fittings and extractor grilles where reachable
